Precision Wins the SBA’s Top Award for California

FRESNO, California, March 20, 2023 – The SBA today announced that San Luis Obispo entrepreneurs Jared Malapit, Erik Wright and Karl Vaillancourt, owners of Precision Construction Services, are California’s 2023 Small Business Persons of the Year.

Precision Construction Services is an award-winning commercial construction firm headquartered in San Luis Obispo and serving clients throughout California and the Western United States. The Small Business Persons of the Year Award, the Small Business Administration’s highest honor, recognizes both success in business and contributions to the local community.

A Native American-owned company, Precision was founded in 2013 by Malapit, Wright and Vaillancourt, three friends and rock-climbing partners who shared a certain frustration with the construction industry, which can be slow to change and adopt new ideas. They left successful careers in construction to form Precision, a progressive company dedicated to advancing the industry and particularly, the culture of construction.

Recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing companies in America, Precision has built the West Coast’s first rocket landing facility at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a 3D printing lab for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the world’s first Hyperloop tunnel, and projects throughout Yosemite National Park, including restorations on the historic Ahwahnee hotel.

Malapit, Wright and Vaillancourt will be recognized on Sunday, April 30 and Monday, May 1 during the SBA’s National Small Business Week awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. At the event, one of the winners from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico will be announced as the 2023 National Small Business Person of the Year.

“The founders of Precision Construction are a great example of how SBA programs help small business owners start up, scale up and succeed,” said SBA Fresno District Director Dawn Golik.  “Jared, Erik and Karl’s decision to obtain certification from the SBA’s 8a Business Development Program has given their company a significant competitive advantage in government contracting and helped the firm grow,” added Golik.

Precision’s federal clients —  including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, General Services Administration,  Bureau of Prisons, National Park Service and CDC — have helped establish the company as a small business that can compete with, and win contracts against, major global firms. Precision specializes in high-security facilities, including ongoing projects for the Missile Defense Agency at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Precision supplies design-build, general contracting, and construction management services, and in addition to its headquarters on California’s Central Coast, has offices in San Diego, Los Angeles, Spokane, WA and Kona, HI.

As significant as Precision’s growth and success is the owners’ commitment to advancing the industry and the communities where they live and work. Malapit, Wright and Vaillancourt are creating a construction culture built on trust, collaboration, and challenging conventional answers. Precision’s community outreach includes hosting community/industry events; donating time, funding, and construction services to local nonprofits; and actively supporting Native American professional groups, regional economic development groups, women’s construction industry associations, and many other organizations.

“From Day One, we wanted to have a positive impact on the communities we love while pushing our industry forward,” Malapit said. “Creating benefits both economically and socially is something we take great pride in. The SBA has been an incredible partner and we could not have done it without them.”
