Modernizing a Campus Bowling Center

Precision provided cost estimating and project planning services for the renovation of Mustang Lanes, the student-run bowling center in the University Union at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. As one of the university’s most popular on-campus recreation venues, Mustang Lanes serves students, faculty, and the community, and has long been a hub for social events, intramural leagues, and student employment opportunities.

The renovation project aimed to modernize and refresh the space while maintaining the character and energy that have defined Mustang Lanes since it opened in the 1960s. Precision’s scope included detailed construction cost estimates to support the university’s planning, budgeting, and funding approval processes. This allowed stakeholders to align design ambitions with fiscal realities, enabling informed decisions from early concept through project execution.

Upgrades to Mustang Lanes focused on improving the facility’s functionality, accessibility, and overall experience for users. Renovations included updated finishes, new lighting, improved seating areas, ADA-compliant improvements, and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems. The project also considered future-proofing the space with infrastructure enhancements to support bowling technology and improved energy efficiency.

The student-managed operation provides hands-on experience in business management, customer service, and facility operations. Precision’s work helped ensure Mustang Lanes remains a vibrant and financially sustainable asset for years to come.
