Cutting-Edge Science Center Enhances STEM Education at Livingstone College

Livingstone College Science Center is a state-of-the-art academic facility designed to enhance STEM education at one of North Carolina’s historic institutions. Precision provided detailed construction cost estimating services for the new F. George Shipman Science Center, a 14,000-square-foot complex that serves as a hub for advanced scientific learning and exploration.

The facility includes a large, multifunctional planetarium that doubles as a lecture auditorium and theater—designed to support immersive learning and public educational events. In addition to the planetarium, the building features specialized laboratories tailored to support coursework and research in chemistry, molecular and cell biology, and anatomy. Each lab is outfitted with modern infrastructure to meet the technical and safety needs of their respective disciplines.

Supporting these core academic spaces are specialized rooms dedicated to research equipment and secure specimen storage. These auxiliary spaces are vital for both research and instruction, and allow faculty and students to engage in hands-on, inquiry-driven learning.

In addition to the building, the project included significant site development, including the construction of a large retention basin to manage stormwater runoff. This component was essential to maintaining sustainability standards and compliance with environmental regulations. The project also encompassed parking-lot resurfacing and new curbs, gutters, and landscaping.

Throughout the preconstruction phase, Precision worked closely with the college, the design team, and the consultants to develop accurate, transparent cost estimates aligned with the institution’s budget and long-term goals. Our involvement helped streamline decision-making and ensured fiscal responsibility at every stage.
